Advantages of OCI card

  • Multi-purpose, multiple entries, lifelong visa for visiting India.
  • Exemption from registration with local police authority for any length of stay in India.
  • Parity with NRIs in respect of economic, financial and education fields except in matters relating to the acquisition of agricultural / plantation properties.
  • Parity with Non-Resident Indians in the matter of inter-country adoption of Indian children.
  • Parity with resident Indian nationals in matters of tariffs in domestic air fares.
  • Parity with domestic Indian visitors in respect of entry fees for visiting national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, visiting national monuments, historical sites and museums in India.
  • Practicing the following professions – doctors, dentists, nurses and pharmacists, advocates, architects and chartered accountants.

Disadvantages of OCI card

  • You have to renounce your Indian Passport.
  • You have no voting rights.
  • You cannot be a candidate for Lok Sabha / Rajya Sabha / Legislative Assembly / Council or a member of the House of the People or of the Council of States.
  • You cannot hold constitutional posts such as President, Vice President, Judge of Supreme Court / High Court, etc..
  • You cannot normally hold employment in the Government of India.

How NRI’s can exchange Rs 500 and 1000- till June 30 2017

RBI has allowed NRI’s ( non-resident Indians) to exchange scrapped Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes till June 30. NRIs and Indians returning from abroad will have to physically show the old Rs 500 and 1,000 rupee notes to Customs officials at the airport and get a declaration form stamped before they can deposit the demonetised currency in RBI.

  • NRI’s who were abroad during November 9 and December 30, 2016, can exchange old Rs.500 and Rs.1000 currencies up to June 30, 2017 – The limit for NRIs will Rs 25,000 per person as per the relevant FEMA Regulations
  • Resident Indians who were abroad during November 9 and December 30, 2016, can exchange old Rs.500 and Rs.1000 currencies up to March 31, 2017- no limit for exchange for the eligible Resident Indians.

NRIs, Indians returning home to show old notes to Customs

  • Indians abroad will have to produce a “copy of passport with immigration stamp as proof of the individual’s absence from the country during the period November 9, 2016, to December 30, 2016″

Where can I deposit the money ?

For NRIs the facility is available from January 2, 2017 to June 30, 2017 at five Reserve Bank offices.

  • Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, and Nagpur.

How NRIs can exchange old Rs 500 & 1,000 notes?

Here are some tips to exchange old Rs 500 & 1,000 notes for Indian’s who live out of India  ?

1. If you are travelling, carry the cash with you to India and deposit in your account till Dec 30, 2016
If you dont have plans to travel this year, you can still exchange old 500 and 1000 rupees at RBI offices with proof.

2. If you are NOT travelling, give cash to a friend/ relative who is to India

  • authorise in writing enabling another person in India to deposit the notes into your bank account.

3. Deposit to Non Resident Ordinary Rupee (NRO) account.

  • If you have an Non Resident Ordinary Rupee (NRO) account, deposit it
